CED 50th Anniversary - Visualizing the Future of Environmental Design: Bottom-Up: The Integration of the Poorest Countries into Global Society Paul Collier, Professor of Economics, Oxford University Bottom-Up: The Integration of the Poorest Countries into Global Society A billion people live in countries that have fallen far behind the rest of mankind. How, over the coming decades, can these societies develop? As they transform, what will be the implications for design? Paul Collier's research focuses on the causes and consequences of civil war; the effects of aid; and the problems of democracy in low-income and natural-resource-rich societies. In the past year Mr. Collier has served as the senior adviser to the Blair Commission on Africa; has addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations; given a seminar at 10 Downing Street; and been invited to meet with Condoleezza Rice on her recent United Kingdom visit. http://www.ced.berkeley.edu
