Dr. Tricia Rose suggests that there is still work to be done in thinking about questions of community, equality and justice. Her focus is not on the issues of structural oppression, but on the difficulty in creating an honest conversation about these issues. Tricia Rose graduated from Yale University where she received a BA in Sociology and then received her Ph.D. from Brown University in American Studies. She has taught at NYU, UC Santa Cruz and is now Professor of Africana Studies at Brown University. Her book, Black Noise: Rap Music and Black Culture in Contemporary America is considered foundational text for the study of hip hop, one that has defined what is now an entire field of study.
