The March 11 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Japan led to the loss of nearly 16,000 lives and the catastrophic failure of the Fukushima II Nuclear Power Plant. More than 300,000 people were driven from their homes, creating an enormous humanitarian crisis that persists to this day. Now, the Japanese art superstar Takashi Murakami has joined forces with Christie's for a charity auction, set for November 9. Sixteen artists, including Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, Cindy Sherman, and Yoshitomo Nara, have contributed artworks for the auction, which is expected to raise as much as $5 million for relief efforts. Recently, ARTINFO sat down to talk to Murakami about the sale, his own experience of the natural disaster, and why it helps to have friends like Christie's owner François Pinault.
