In this lecture/discussion session from my Fall 2013 Introduction to Philosophy class at Marist College, we begin our study of Rene Descartes' late work, The Passions of the Soul, focusing on the first part of the work. In that part, Descartes discusses how the mind/soul and the body interact, specifically through the brain. We examine some of Descartes long-since outmoded views on physiology (e.g. involving animal spirits) and mind-body interaction (e.g. through the pineal gland) and discuss how some of his main conceptions could still be relevant today.
