In this 2013 documentary from ITV, host Shelia Hancock takes us on a deep exploration of the Bronte sisters: Emily, Charlotte and Anne. From their early life in Haworth Parsonage creating imaginary worlds with brother Branwell to their haunting and moving novels Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, we learn how the moors, unrequited love and feminism influenced these women. Hancock also explores her own understanding of Wuthering Heights and the character Heathcliff, Charlotte’s time in Brussels with teacher/suitor Monsieur AJ and Anne’s depictions of an abusive marriage solidifying her novel as the better of the others. We hear excerpts from the novels; see a ballet adaptation of Wuthering Heights by David Nixon of Northern Ballet, capturing Jane Eyre in art from Dame Paula Rego and the poems left behind with Ann Dinsdale, Collections Manager for the Bronte Parsonage. Hancock’s enthusiasm, humor and love for the Brontes shines throughout this documentary, and brother Branwell is not forgotten either!
