In this video from The British Library, actor Simon Callow talks about Charles Dickens reading his various novels out loud to numerous audiences. We learn how Dickens made audiences laugh, cry and more from performing stories including Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol. Many actors would say that if Dickens “weren’t a novelist,” he would have made quite the actor. This phenomenon helped Dickens not only become a spokesman for the working class, but develop relationships with his readers.
