Dr. Rick Roderick of Duke University examines the place of western philosophy in history and chronicles its development from the ancient Greek to post modernist movements. The series of lectures takes as its guiding question "What does it mean to be human?" Roderick presents arguments about some of the problems and issues regarding human nature by drawing on the thoughts of eminent philosophers and philosophical theories. Socrates, various Greek philosophical schools, Kant, John Stuart Mill, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Kierkegaard are all considered. He considers the content of philosophies and their historical context as well as the relationship between philosophy, values, culture, and society.
